The Sacraments

Marriage

Preparing to begin married life in the Church at St. Martin Catholic Church, Lugbe-FHA.

Holy Matrimony

A Covenant Blessed by the Church

Marriage is a sacred, lifelong union between a man and a woman, instituted by God and blessed by the Church. We help couples prepare for the Sacrament through spiritual guidance and pastoral care.

Preparation

Six Steps to Your Wedding

  1. Initial Consultation with the Parish Priest

Book an appointment with the Parish Priest at least six months before your intended wedding date. He will explain the preparation process and church requirements, and agree a date with you.

  2. Pre-Marital Instruction

Attend the Marriage Preparation Course organised by the parish or the Archdiocese. It covers:

    • The meaning of Christian marriage
    • The responsibilities of husband and wife
    • Communication and resolving conflict
    • Family life and raising children in the faith
  3. Sacramental Requirements

At least one partner must be a baptised and practising Catholic. The couple must provide:

    • Baptismal certificates, issued within the last six months
    • Confirmation certificates
    • First Holy Communion certificates
    • A letter of freedom, if never married before
  4. Canonical Interview and Marriage Banns

The priest will interview the couple to be sure both understand the sacrament. The banns, the public announcement of the wedding, are read in the parish on three Sundays before the wedding.

  5. Sacrament of Reconciliation

Couples are encouraged to go to Confession before the wedding, so that married life begins in God’s grace.

  6. Rehearsal and Ceremony

A rehearsal is scheduled before the wedding. Please arrive at the church on time on the day, and keep music, decorations and photography within church guidelines.
